If you have ministers on payroll for your church, you want to be careful not to manage their tax deductions the same way that you manage the tax deductions for regular employees.For one, ministers have what’s called a dual status. They’re considered to be self-employed as well as employees for the church. The key thing is that when you’re setting up payroll for the ministers, you want to make sure that their income is not subject to Social Security taxes as well as Medicare taxes.You’ll want to check your [payroll system] settings and make sure that you remove those settings for your ministers when you’re running them through your payroll system.That’s my accounting tip for today.
